Planning Your Course of Study

Wondering what courses you need to take? Here is a link to the Chemistry Curriculum as described in the UMW course catalog.

=====================================

A typical course sequence is as follows:

Year 1 Fall Semester: Chemistry 111, Mathematics 121 Spring Semester: Chemistry 112, Mathematics 122

Year 2 Fall Semester: Chemistry 211, Physics 105 Spring Semester: Chemistry 212, Physics 106 During this year, you should also take Chemistry 252 You may also want to consider taking one of your chemistry electives this year (e.g., Chemistry 331/332, 343). We also recommend that you consider participating in faculty research during your sophomore year. A foundation in research is a key stepping stone to success in graduate or professional school.

Year 3 Fall Semester: Chemistry 383, Chemistry 423 Spring Semester: Chemistry 384 You may also want to consider taking Chemistry 317/318 this year if you are interested in biochemistry. You should also strongly consider getting involved in faculty research this year or continuing to do so if you started your sophomore year.

Year 4 Fall Semester: Chemistry 387 Spring Semester: Chemistry 388, 453 If you didn't take Chemistry 423 in your third year, you will need to take it this year to graduate! If you have been active in faculty research during the previous years, you may want to consider doing honors research this year. If you haven't done any research before your senior year, it's never too late to start!
