Winners of the 2007 Chemistry Awards

Dr. Slunt had the distinct honor of announcing the 2007 Chemistry Award winners on Monday, April 23rd during Chemistry Seminar. Graduating senior Asako Kubota was selected as the recipient of the ACS Outstanding Senior Award. Fellow senior Paul Walsh was selected as the recipient of the American Institution of Chemists Foundation Outstanding Senior Award. Junior Chemistry major, Rebecca Funkhouser will receive the Roy Seldon Cook Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year.

ACS Student Affiliates Elect Officers for 2007-2008

The student affliliates of the American Chemical Society elected new officers at their meeting Wednesday, April 11th.  The officers for the 2007-2008 academic year will be

  • Rebecca Funkhouser - Vice President
  • Juliana Brown - Treasurer
  • Samantha Davis - Secretary
  • Ben Smith - student/faculty liason

In addition, the annual chemistry department picnic is scheduled for Friday, April 27 at 4 pm at Old Mill Park.  Contact one of the current or future officers for additional information

Dr. Sharpless Wins Grant

Dr. Charlie Sharpless has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Research Corporation to conduct research on the photochemistry of humic substances. If you see Dr. Sharpless, please congratulate him! And, if you are interested in environmental chemistry and would like to do research this summer, definitely contact him. He may have some money in the grant for students. Even if you are not interested, please congratulate him as it is a prestigious award!
